Blackline Comics History

Well, there’s not a whole lot to tell. Jay Savage is a tenacious, diligent individual who wears many hats: talented comics penciller, webmaster extraordinaire, and in possession of a love of comics that has taken him through the intricacies of the retailers market for many years. Michael De Lepine has honed his skills as a comic book letterer for over twenty years, and has seen all aspects of the comics industry up close, editorial, creative and retail included. It was the Comicbook Artists Guild (or CAG, for short) that brought them together; an organization designed to bring comic creators, professional and amateur alike, together to network and to learn from each other. Michael was the Vice President of West Coast Operations, running two Southern California CAG Chapters. Jay was interested in joining CAG by opening up what would have been the first CAG Chapter in Las Vegas, where Jay resides.

We’ll just say that CAG didn’t work out for either Michael or Jay, but the CAG experience served to foster a strong friendship in them in which they discovered they were of like mind and ambition. Putting their creative heads together, they came up with Blackline Comics, a comics company that would cultivate creator-owned projects produced by the best talent, to be distributed through the unlimited and largely untapped resources of the internet. Blackline launched in December 2008 with the promise of digital comics excitement.

In the short time that has passed, Blackline has developed the beginnings of a relationship with a major book publishing house for the purpose of producing digital e-Books that can be downloaded to be read on personal computers e-Book readers and smart phones, and has built working relations with several comic creators who possess eclectically diverse tastes in storytelling and uncompromising talent. Their stories will be woven into the tapestry of the Blackline website in the extremely near future, and if our recent march into Comic-Con 2009 is any indication, many more creators and fans will follow!
